Messiah announces pass/fail policy for spring 2020 semester 04.01.20

Messiah is committed to supporting student success and recognizes the need for student choice given the challenges faced by both students and faculty in this unexpected transition to online learning. Our goal is to simultaneously maintain the integrity of our academic offerings and protect student success and progression in programs that are accredited or have professional certifications, as well as properly advise students who plan to pursue graduate, health, or medical training after graduation from Messiah.

To balance these important factors, Messiah has adopted a broad pass/fail policy for the spring 2020 semester as well as a companion check list for students. To support students in making informed and careful decisions ,they must consult with their academic advisor prior to selecting any courses as P/F.

Will my Messiah College scholarship be impacted by my GPA from the spring 2020 semester?

The following policy will be adopted for Messiah College Scholarships

  • For Messiah College scholarships (Trustee’s, President’s, Provost’s, Faculty, Dean’s, Martin’s, R.H. Flowers, Vollmer’s, and Shaffer-Goodling), there will not be a GPA review this year. Students will continue to receive their current internal scholarship support in the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • The regular GPA review for Messiah College Scholarships will be in place again in spring 2021, but GPA from spring 2020 will only be counted in this internal scholarship review if it is the same as or higher than the cumulative GPA.
  • This exception is only for internal scholarship review; as noted above, for all other purposes, spring term 2020 grades are recorded on student academic transcripts.
  • Note that Title IV Aid (Unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loans, Subsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loans, Federal Pell Grants, Federal SEOG, TEACH Grants, and IRAQ and Afghanistan Service Grants) still requires satisfactory academic progress as spelled out in financial aid policies found here.[1]

Please continue to check Messiah’s emergency response page .   We will continue to update as additional decisions are finalized.
