New information will be posted on this blog as it is made available. Please check this blog frequently, as information related to this issue is changing rapidly. There are additional details on Messiah’ FAQ page for COVID-19 on our emergency response website.
Note: Messiah College does not have any reported or confirmed cases of the COVID-2019 Novel Coronavirus as of the time and date of this posting.
Below are some of the FAQs that college leadership have received since Messiah announced changes to its spring semester earlier today. We will continue to update as additional decisions are finalized.
Will Messiah be issuing room and board refunds for the time that students are off campus and studying remotely?
At this time the College has not made a formal decision regarding potential partial refunds of room and board. Updates and information related to this issue will be communicated from the College directly to students and will also be posted on the this website.
Will students with campus jobs be allowed to continue working while the college is holding classes online?
The College is working on a plan for this and students will soon receive additional details directly from the Student Employment Office.
Are students who are authorized to live on campus during spring break permitted to remain on campus after spring break? What about students who wish to return to live on campus following spring break?
The College is asking the majority of students who leave campus for spring break not to return to campus prior to Monday, April 13. However, for students who are already living on campus, and students who must return to campus due to extenuating and/or compelling circumstances, we will work with you on an individual basis to make special visit or housing arrangements. Students should complete this form at https://www.messiah.edu/forms/form/730/en/returning_to_campus to begin this conversation with Residence Life.
Please note as the public health situation with COVID-19 changes, the College reserves the right to close residence halls and change dining options within a 24-hour notice.
Cancellation of campus events
Messiah College has cancelled all events scheduled to be held on its campus beginning Saturday, March 14 through Tuesday, April 14. The status of events scheduled after April 14 is currently being evaluated by campus leadership, and will be assessed in light of the ongoing public health status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Suspension of athletic events
In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC), the athletic conference in which Messiah competes, announced the suspension of all conference and non-conference athletic competition for all 17 member institutions from March 16 through March 30. The NCAA has additionally been announcing cancelation of championship athletic events. For the latest and more details, visit www.gomessiah.com.
Does Messiah currently have students studying abroad?
The majority of Messiah’s international program partners who continued to host students abroad announced today that they are cancelling their programs and are working to return those students home to the U.S. Messiah College’s Intercultural Office has been in direct contact with those students today to help with their transition home, answer questions and provide support as needed.
Messiah continues to be in ongoing communication with its remaining off-campus program partner sites (currently hosting seven students internationally) to gather their input on their local health situations, resources and advisories—and to monitor the status of those programs.
